Support Reading Comprehension with Activity Worksheets for Organizing Information
Science A-Z Graphic Organizers support content-area learning and reading comprehension as students read fiction and nonfiction science texts. The Graphic Organizer collections are arranged by primary (grades K-2) and intermediate (grades 3-6) as well as by nonfiction and fiction. Select appropriate sheets for informational texts or literary texts to support students who are learning at different developmental levels and reading for various purposes.
Why Use Graphic Organizers
Research shows graphic organizers aid comprehension by complementing the human brain's natural process of making connections. They also provide a simple structure for thinking about old and new information. Graphic Organizers help students sort ideas, analyze relationships, review concepts, and demonstrate new understanding.
Science A-Z Graphic Organizers can be used by students at every stage in the learning process — from brainstorming to presenting final research findings — and can then be used by teachers as formative assessments of reading comprehension.
How to Use Graphic Organizers
Choose a Graphic Organizer from the list provided with each Science A-Z instructional unit (or choose from the larger collection) and assign it for students to use as they read a Unit Nonfiction Book or any other text from Science A-Z.
Help students organize chunks of information in the Graphic Organizers by providing instruction before, during, and after reading.
- Instructions are written directly to students on the intermediate Graphic Organizers and written to teachers on primary Graphic Organizers.
- Eventually students will complete the Graphic Organizers independently as they develop as learners.
Students can also use the Graphic Organizers for research projects and to plan writing and science assignments.
