Career Files Tips
Resources for Describing Different Science Careers to Kids
Career Files help students to learn how ideas and concepts in Science A-Z instructional units relate to real-world jobs, including those in STEM fields. Each Career File explains the various levels of skills, training, and education required for many science careers. Career Files also explain the skills and practices used by experts in various STEM fields.
Why Use Career Files
Teaching about science careers helps teachers satisfy state and national standards related to science as a human endeavor. More importantly, students may aspire to take high school classes and college coursework that pave the path to one of these STEM careers.
How to Use Career Files
Give students Career Files to read as support for Science A-Z instructional units or as independent reading opportunities about science careers.
- Look for the STEM icon that indicates whether the career uses science, technology, engineering, and/or math.
- Other Career Files feature professions that are not strictly science careers, but explain how science knowledge and skills are important to these careers.
After reading, students can conduct additional research about careers that interest them, including interviewing professionals in that field. Students also can conduct a role play to experience what its like to participate in a career they read about.
